Review: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
December 5, 2022
** Spoiler alert **
This book was so cozy and made me nostalgic for a time that I 100% would not have survived
for a variety of reasons. There were moments where it was a tad too preachy (I gagged when
Professor Bhaer fiercely defended god against the intellectuals) but I understand that
this was a product of it’s time and can be looked at with a feminist lens and considered
quite radical, I guess.
But those final chapters were MESSYYYY! I for the life of me can not understand why/ how Amy and Laurie ended up together. I get Jo and Laurie not being ultimately compatible, she had been very clear that she did not love him and that her love was more brotherly, whatever. I also get that Louisa May Alcott wanted to troll the army of tweens that wanted Jo and Laurie to get together, I respect that. But Amy?? It feels like Laurie exhausted all options with every March girl and ultimately settled on Amy. The lines about replacing his love for Jo with Amy… big yikes I could never. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think Amy should have ended up with Fred Vaughn. At least she’d be wealthy and not live life as runner up to her sister. I am perturbed!
